Choosing Your Next Pet: Dogs Vs. Cats

Blog

14 Mar

Pet ownership is a great way to add companionship to peoples’ lives. Of course, there is a lot of responsibility involved, from walking your furry friend to feeding them the right nutritional food. Two of the most popular pets worldwide are cats and dogs, and deciding between them can be tough, but it’s important to choose the right one for both their happiness and that of their owner.

Independence

Cats are independent creatures that can disappear for days only to mysteriously reappear. Dogs, on the other hand, are much more reliant on their owners. If you don’t mind being constantly needed by your pet, then get a dog. However, if you like your space, then a cat is the better option.

Noise Levels

When it comes to noise decimals, cats are a lot quieter than dogs. Dogs can often bark and howl, especially after moving to a new home. Of course, this does depend on the breed.

With cats, you may experience some loud purring, but that’s about it. However, if a cat comes in contact with a dog, then there will be a lot of noise.

Time Investment

When trying to determine which pets are the best, you should keep in mind that dogs need constant attention and maintenance. You will need to play with them, walk them daily, feed them, and just be their friend. In contrast, cats require a lot less attention. They can spend a lot of time to themselves and are a lot less of a time investment.

Don’t get a dog if you are simply too busy with work or other commitments. Nobody wants to get one and then feel guilty about not finding the time to walk it.

Allergies

Around 10% of people have pet allergies, with cat allergies being significantly more common than dog allergies (about twice as much). Now, most people believe that these allergies are caused by fur. However, it is the proteins found in the pet’s skin, urine, and saliva that are the true culprits.

Make sure you consider the other people in your house before getting either pet. Many people don’t advertise their allergies so if you are unsure then just ask them directly. The last thing you want to do is get a pet and then find out a family member is allergic. The same goes for any regular friends and visitors to the house.

Cost

This category is pretty close. Both cats and dogs require an initial investment of roughly the same amount. Cats need scratching posts and litter while dogs need a leash and a dog bed or dog house if living outdoors. Both pets will require toys as well.

As for feeding them, dog food is more expensive, and more of it is needed. Just make sure you can commit to the financial side of pet ownership.

Conclusion

You don’t want to get a pet that ends up as more of a problem than a companion. That’s why you should consider the responsibilities and potential problems assorted which cats and dogs. Don’t forget to consider the other people in your home. They may need reassurance or just not be compatible with a particular pet.
