Why your local vet is invaluable to your family

Lifestyle

22 Nov

Adopting a new pet can feel like a huge responsibility. In many ways, it’s almost like bringing home a newborn baby for the first time: you have no experience in being responsible for another life, and you feel relatively amateur when it comes to being the person in charge of their wellbeing. If you’ve never adopted a new pet and would like to do the best job possible, then the first item on your to-do list is to register with a local vet.

Weight and health

While we as human beings might avoid trips to the doctor to avoid being told we’re overweight, our pets have less of an easy ride. Taking your pet for a weight and health check-up is so important for enabling them to live and enjoy life to the fullest. A vet is the best-qualified person to tell you how to provide your pet with a healthy lifestyle in order to maintain an ideal weight. As with humans, too much weight and a junk-food diet can create health problems such as heart problems and diabetes.

It doesn’t just end at your pet’s weight, either. You might be surprised to learn that some clinics also double-up as a veterinary practice and grooming center. Local clinics such as Heart and Paw are the best place to get your pet checked-up and also cleaned up, to keep them feeling clean and healthy. It’s important to remember that your dog needs a trip to the dentist, too, but you don’t have to worry as your vet will also check their dental health. They know how vital it is to keep your pet’s teeth in prime condition to help them eat and chew in comfort.

Medication and advice

This may seem self-explanatory; however, there is much more pertinent and serious issue on the rise when it comes to medication. Antibiotic resistance isn’t just a problem for humans; it’s affecting our beloved pets, too. The only real way to combat this is to ensure that antibiotics are ingested correctly and the course of medication is finished. Not doing so will contribute to a problem that could affect both humans and animals for generations to come.

Friendly service

You care about your pets, and so you want a vet that reflects your concern. It’s important that your veterinary practitioners are reliable and qualified in their profession, but your fundamental trust in them is important, too. It is just as valuable to have a friendly and approachable vet as it is to have one that excels in their field. Your vet will only be invaluable to your family if you have absolute faith in them that they will provide the care you expect.

Your vet is essentially a GP for your pets. It is important that you register with a vet as soon as you adopt a new animal into your family. Registering doesn’t just provide you with a contact number and a name, it also informs you about what services they provide. Not all veterinary practices provide emergency care, for example. You will only know this if you call to register and find out.
