The Best Ways of Keeping Your Memory Active

Healthy

20 Aug

When life gets busy, it’s very easy to have moments of forgetfulness. Whilst this is a common occurrence amongst people of all ages, having an inherently poor memory can be an incredibly frustrating experience. Although genetics play a big role in memory loss when it comes to serious neurological conditions, recent research suggests that diet and lifestyle also has a huge bearing on memory, too. With that in mind, we’ve put together a quick list of things you can do to help boost your memory and keep your mind active.

Take Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil is rich in a number of important omega-3 fatty acids including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Both EPA and DHA have been proven to be vital to the proper functioning of the brain and can also help reduce inflammation throughout the body, which has also been linked to cognitive decline. A number of studies over the years have shown that consuming foods high in fish oil can also improve both short and long term memory, especially in older people. In addition to this, the aforementioned fats are important in the fight against heart disease and other major health conditions.

Playing Card Games

Card games have been linked to larger brain volume and better memory. A recent study at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute followed 329 people who were considered to be at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The participants were then questioned about their activities and it was found that those who took part in puzzles and played card games scored better in memory and thinking tests. The recent spike in popularity of online casino on platforms such as Magical Vegas Casino now means that you can play your favourite card games such as Texas Hold’em poker on your mobile device and keep your memory sharp whenever you have a few hours to pass the time.

Add Some Cocoa To Your Diet

Cocoa is both nutritious and delicious in equal measure. However, it’s also been suggested that the flavonoids provided by cocoa help stimulate blood flow in parts of the brain involving memory. To reap the full benefits of this, it’s recommended that you choose dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or more – the higher the cocoa content, the larger the number of antioxidants. Yes, you’re reading this right. Eating chocolate can help boost your memory (as long as you don’t overdo it, of course).

The Bottom Line

There are a number of simple and fun ways of boosting your memory, most of which don’t require a massive change in your diet or lifestyle. Whilst some people are unlucky enough to be predisposed to memory affecting afflictions, it can’t do any harm to try and give yourself the best possible chance of keeping your memory in tip-top shape for as long as possible.
