What’s the Deal with Studying While Playing Music?

Blog· Lifestyle· Successful· Technology

29 Jan

A lot of times it is easier to concentrate and even get through the day when you’re playing your favorite music. In fact, when you have the music cranked up loud while you’re wearing headphones, you can drown out distractions and stay really focused for hours. For Hofstra University students or any person pursuing an advanced degree, studying is something that is done daily. After you brush your teeth and eat breakfast, you’re probably going to want to get some studying in. If you have any type of commute to work and you depend on public transportation, you can study then. In many of these situations, you can get more studying accomplished if you are listening to the right music.

Does Music Help You Focus?

When you are looking at something that requires you to focus during your studies, is it easy for you to understand new concepts? Studying is all about looking at written words and understanding them clearly. Sometimes source materials like charts, graphs, and other supporting aids can be of assistance. In the end, your musical choices are also really connected to your ability to focus. If you are kind of losing track of time while you study instead of wanting to look at the clock every five minutes, then you are probably choosing music that is helping you to focus better.

Concentrating While Studying

It can be a big deal when you want to start studying but you just can’t get into it because you’re having trouble concentrating. Those in pursuit of a health law degree not only have a lot of studying to do, they also have lots of tests. This means that you have to retain everything that you study, so concentration is highly important. Music can and does help with concentration during studies, but you can’t just turn on the radio and hope to be more focused. There are specific genres and even suggested speeds that you should be listening to your music at if you are hoping to concentration better.

Eliminating Outside Distractions During Study Sessions

A lot of people reach for their headphones when they’re about to study because it helps them to block out distracting sounds. When you have the music cranked up on your stereo or a pair of noise cancelling headphones on, you don’t hear the phone ring, the doorbell, or the sound of your neighbors as they move around. The only problem with listening to some kinds of music while you study is that the music can be a distraction itself. Any music that includes singing or spoken words will cause your brain to go off track. Instead of seeing only the words in your textbooks, your brain will also conjure up the lyrics. Aim for music that is completely instrumental – like electronica – if you are hoping to be less distracted as you study.

There isn’t one specific song that is guaranteed to help you study better. On the other hand, music that doesn’t contain lyrics and is slightly fast in tempo has been shown to help students. Try listening to a few different kinds of music while you study and see what happens.
