4 Things to Know If You’re Caught Shoplifting

Blog

5 Jul

When you’re young and carefree, shoplifting may seem like nothing more than an innocent thrill. It’s a way to “get your kicks,” and often many people don’t consider shoplifting as more than just a “vice.”

Yet, the consequences of getting caught shoplifting can be incredibly serious. If you find yourself caught shoplifting, it’s important that you understand the potential consequences and how to navigate the legal fallout. If you’re caught shoplifting here’s what you need to know.

The Police Will Likely Be Involved

If you’re caught, most likely the first thing that the merchant will tell you is that they’re going to call the police. Legally, they have the right to detain you until the police arrive. While waiting for the authorities, it’s important that you stay calm and cooperate.

The more you resist or deny or admit or do anything other than stay calm and wait, the more guilty you’re going to make yourself appear. Any statements you make could be used against you later, so hang tight and wait for the authorities to arrive. Being respectful and compliant is critical, as this can influence how the entire situation is handled.

You May Face Charges

Based on the value of what you stole, and whether you have a criminal history or not, you may face charges. The charges can range from a misdemeanor to a felony, so you will require a lawyer.

A misdemeanor would usually be issued if it was a small theft like a pack of gum or a t-shirt. Usually, you may have to face a fine or community service. However, if you steal high-value items like jewelry, and you happen to have prior convictions, this could lead to jail time. Regardless of either charge, it will stay in your public record.

Tarnished Future

Being convicted of shoplifting can affect your life beyond just the immediate consequences. It can affect your ability to get housing in the future or even a job! Since many employers and landlords require background checks, they may be hesitant to associate themselves with someone who is known for theft.

Not to mention, there is a stigma attached to shoplifting which will be looked down upon by your peers and family. Ultimately, something seemingly innocent could affect your personal relationships and reputation in your community.

Legal Stress

Any time you must navigate the legal system, it can be confusing and overwhelming. Understanding all the legal jargon and having to appear in court is nothing less than a headache.

Not to mention, you’ll have to pay for a lawyer which rarely comes for a small fee. However, if you hope to potentially reduce your charges or penalties, you’ll need a lawyer to help you navigate. Trying to do it alone could end up being disastrous since there are so many complexities involved in the legal world.
